Resemblance Score Explained

When Related Faces compares two faces, it assigns each potential match a Resemblance Score, a percentage that indicates how visually similar the two faces are.

What the Score Means

  • 98–99% means the faces are extremely close, often the same person

  • 95–97% is a strong resemblance, but could be a close relative

  • Below 95% may still be accurate, especially if photos vary in age or angle

📌 High resemblance does not always equal a match, lighting, age difference, and quality can impact score accuracy.

Why Scores Vary

Several factors influence the resemblance score:

  • Photo quality — sharpness, lighting, and resolution

  • Face angle or tilt — side profiles usually score lower

  • Age differences — baby vs. adult photos may result in lower scores

  • Facial expressions — smiles, squints, or shadows can skew results

Use the Score as a Guide

Think of the score as a starting point, not a final decision. Your insight is what confirms or rules out a match.

When in doubt:

  • Click the face to see the full photo

  • Compare it to other known faces in the same profile

  • Use the Uncertain option if you’re not ready to commit

🧠 Human judgment is critical, the system is powerful, but it improves most when real people make thoughtful decisions.

  • A face comparison card in context

  • Ideally a visual of same person at different ages
