Naming Photos and Adding Notes
Each photo you upload has a custom name and an optional note, which helps you (and others) understand its context over time.
These fields are completely up to you — use them to document dates, locations, occasions, or any details that might help you identify the people in the image.
Naming a Photo
Every photo in your collection should have a name — it’s the simplest way to stay organized and make your results more meaningful.
To name or rename a photo:
Open the photo
Click the photo name at the top of the screen
Type your new name and press Enter
Even something simple like “Smith Family 1955” or “Unknown Girl in Bonnet” helps you (and others) recognize and track matches later.
🟢 Pro Tip: Photos without names can be easy to overlook — giving each one a unique label makes your entire collection more powerful and easier to navigate.
Adding a Photo Note
Photo notes live below the photo name and are also fully editable.
Use them for:
Dates or time periods
Locations or events
Handwritten notes from the original image
Guesswork or theories (“Maybe Sarah Bennett?”)
To edit the note:
Open the photo
Click into the notes field under the name
Type your note and click Save
Notes on Library of Congress Images
If a pairing is made with a Library of Congress (LoC) photo, the notes section will include a link back to the original LoC image.
These images appear in their own tab on the Pairings page inside each person’s profile, keeping them separate from your personal and community matches.
